During Covid my older brother got very Ill and had to be rushed to the hospital. Talking to him every day, 1 day I got a tearful call from him. He was informed he had 2 weeks to live. He had said he KNEW he was going to die soon because the nursing staff, who had been snarky and not getting along with him, were being very nice. Someone had drawn smiley faces on 1 of his paper plates just the Day Before. ( I found this to be very strange and disturbing behavior from his nursing staff, I had been taking notes and keeping track, because of other disturbing behavior)
I had driven the 6 hours 1 way to go see him. I was arranging for his kids to visit. We got the girls there. Then we were working on his sons visit. 2 weeks to the VERY DAY he was told he Had 2 weeks to live, I get another tearful phone call early in the morning. They, the hospital staff were taking his oxygen away and he would die. I called, and was told by a nurse they up his meds, pain meds and valium and just take away the oxygen and he would pass Peacefully! I asked, Why would you do that? The answer I got was, “he asked for it!” That’s when I got really mad and begged her pardon and asked to talk to the doctor, and Demanded I talk with the Hospitals Board of Ethics, and I demanded a Peer Review of ALL HIS MEDICAL RECORDS. I got on the phone to 2 State Representatives and to a Senator to see about bringing him home for Hospice. Long story short, after fighting with his doctor that I WAS FULLY CAPABLE OF TAKING CARE OF HIM, he was transferred to another hospital to get off the pain meds they had had him on, before he would be Allowed to come to my house for Hospice and what we thought was to die. He left there and He is ALIVE, and although has lung damage, he is leading his life and Enjoying it. I do believe calling/emails to State Reps, and Senator Askshar did help tremendously. If I had just accepted what they said, my brother would Not be here today in 2023! And that is ny firm belief.
